Search Terms vs Keywords: The Google Ads Mistake Costing You Leads

Table of Contents

If your cost-per-lead keeps rising while conversions stay flat, the problem usually isn’t your budget, your landing page, or even your ad copy. It’s something more basic: the difference between search terms and keywords.

Most business owners use these two words as if they mean the same thing. In Google Ads, they don’t and mixing them up is one of the most common, most expensive mistakes advertisers make. At Soharon, we’ve audited hundreds of Google Ads accounts, and this one misunderstanding keeps showing up as the hidden reason campaigns underperform.

Here’s what’s really going on, why it matters, and how fixing it can improve your lead quality almost immediately.

What’s the Actual Difference?

A keyword is the word or phrase you choose to bid on. It’s your instruction to Google: “Show my ad when someone searches for something related to this.”

A search term is the actual phrase someone typed into Google before your ad showed up. It’s what really happened — not what you predicted would happen.

The two aren’t always the same. Depending on your match type, Google has some freedom to connect your keyword to searches it thinks are “related,” even if those searches aren’t what you had in mind.

Say you’re a plumbing company bidding on “emergency plumber.” Your ad could also appear for searches like:

  • “how to become an emergency plumber”
  • “emergency plumber salary Dubai”
  • “plumber emergency services near me”
  • “24 hour plumber contact number”

Some of these people want to hire you today. Others are job seekers or researchers with no intention of calling you. Google optimizes for relevance to your keyword — not for your sales goals.

Why This Costs You Money

Every time your ad appears for an irrelevant search, one of two things happens: someone clicks and you pay for a visitor who was never going to convert, or your ad burns impression share and quality score on a search that has nothing to do with your business.

Multiply that across thousands of impressions a month, and it adds up fast. In our audits, we’ve regularly found accounts wasting 30 to 50% of their budget on search terms completely unrelated to what the business actually sells.

This is why two companies can bid on the same keyword, spend the same budget, and get completely different results. The difference isn’t the keyword — it’s how tightly the account controls which searches are allowed to trigger the ad.

How Match Types Change the Picture

Google Ads gives you three main match types, and each one controls how loosely or tightly your keyword decides which searches trigger your ad.

  • Broad match gives Google the most freedom. Your ad can show for searches Google considers contextually related, even if the wording is totally different. It brings volume, but also opens the door to a lot of irrelevant traffic.
  • Phrase match is the middle ground. Your ad shows searches that carry the same meaning as your phrase, generally in a similar order, with some extra words allowed before or after.
  • Exact match gives you the tightest control. Your ad shows mainly for searches close to your keyword’s meaning. Google still allows some close variants, but far fewer unrelated terms slip through.

Many advertisers default to broad matches because it’s easy and promises more traffic. Without close monitoring, though, broad matches are often where budgets quietly disappear.

The Fix: Check Your Search Terms Report

Google Ads already gives you the tool to catch this most advertisers just never open it. Inside your campaign, the Search Terms Report shows you the real queries that triggered your ads, next to the keyword that matched them.

Reviewing it regularly shows you exactly where your keywords and real user behavior are drifting apart. From there, two things help:

Add negative keywords:

If searches like “plumber jobs” or “how to fix a leak yourself” are triggering your ad, exclude them so your ad stops showing that kind of intent.

Refine your match types:

If a keyword is pulling in too much irrelevant traffic under broad match, tightening it to phrase or exact match usually improves lead quality right away, even if the volume drops slightly.

This isn’t a one-time fix. Reviewing search terms, adding negatives, and adjusting match types is an ongoing habit and it’s what separates well-managed accounts from ones that quietly bleed budget month after month.

Real Example

Picture an interior design company bidding on “home renovation.” Under broad match, that keyword might also trigger ads for “home renovation shows to watch,” “home renovation cost calculator,” or “DIY home renovation ideas.”

None of those people are looking to hire a designer. They’re watching TV, checking a budget, or planning a weekend project — but every click still costs the company money that should have gone toward someone actually looking to hire a professional.

By reviewing the search terms report, the company could spot this pattern, add words like “shows,” “calculator,” “DIY,” and “ideas” as negatives, and redirect that budget toward searches with real intent — like “hire interior designer Dubai” or “home renovation company near me.”

Why This Gets Overlooked So Often

Google Ads is built to look simple. Pick some keywords, set a budget, write an ad, and the campaign runs technically without ever being optimized. It’s easy to assume that if a campaign is live and getting clicks, it’s working.

But clicks aren’t the goal. Leads are. The only way to know if your keywords are attracting the right people is to look past the keyword list and into the search terms actually happening behind it. Skip that step, and you’re trusting Google’s automated matching to make decisions that should be yours.

It Takes Ongoing Attention

Search term analysis isn’t something you set up once and forget. As search behavior shifts and campaigns scale, new irrelevant terms keep surfacing. Accounts reviewed and refined weekly consistently outperform accounts left alone after the initial setup.

This kind of hands-on, data-driven management is what separates a campaign that generates real business results from one that just spends a budget.
